Work on the vehicle began in January 1959 as part of the AR/AAV (Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Vehicle) project. In June 1962, Cadillac Motor Car Division delivered the first prototype of the car to the customer. In total (as part of the first generation), three prototypes were made. Further work was continued, and in 1966 the tank was put into service under the designation M551 Sheridan.
