Its most distinctive feature was its swept (variable) wings, which could be adjusted to speed and mission - spread for slower flight, swept for extreme speeds. The aircraft reached speeds in excess of Mach 2 and was among the first to incorporate a terrain-following radar system. It was used for long attacks deep into enemy territory, often at night and in bad weather. Because of its versatility and advanced technology, the F-111 was considered one of the most powerful aircraft in the world at the time. Weapons are fitted to the wings by inserting them into the wing and then rotating them to prevent them from falling out.
