Beskrivelse
S.U.B. — Sumo Updraft Bell 1. Presentation S.U.B. stands for Sumo Updraft Bell : a bulky, low-centered, performance-focused 3D printed battle top. The idea behind S.U.B. is simple: stay low, stay heavy, and keep fighting. Sumo refers to the intentionally massive design. The top is meant to be printed with 100% infill , giving it more weight, more rotational inertia, and a lower center of gravity. Instead of being a lightweight attacker, S.U.B. is designed to behave more like a compact sumo wrestler: stable, grounded, and hard to push around. Updraft comes from the six-fin blade design. Each fin is inspired by an airplane wing profile, but with the camber inverted: the curved side is placed underneath. The goal is to create a downward aerodynamic force while spinning, helping the top stay pressed against the arena floor and generating an upward airflow around it. Bell describes the overall shape. The body flares outward toward the bottom, giving it a silhouette similar to a bell, with the spinning tip in the center like the internal clapper. S.U.B. was designed with performance in mind, while following the rules for Open Sauce 2026 battle compatibility: blade height: 25 mm above the ground maximum blade diameter: 91 mm maximum ripcord length: 273 mm fully 3D printed construction, with no screws, metal parts, or extra hardware To launch it, I also designed a custom bulky double-gear launcher. I call it "The Whale" as it looks like a whale and it's massive ;) The gear reduction is intended to maximize spin speed from a ripcord pull, giving S.U.B. as much starting energy as possible before entering the arena. It is not the sleekest top. It is not the lightest top. It is a heavy, flared, overbuilt spinning bell designed to hit the arena with momentum, stability, and a bit of questionable aerodynamic optimism. 2. Print settings For best performance, durability, and fit, a well-calibrated 3D printer is strongly recommended. Dimensional accuracy is especially important for this project: the battle top and launcher both rely on tight mechanical fits, proper alignment, and smooth movement of printed parts. Also i recomend to print by object, not by layer as the layer bonding will be much better. No support should be needed, but using brim could necessary to print the core part of the spinner (the bell). Battle Top All parts of the battle top should be printed with 100% infill . This is important for three reasons: it increases the total mass of the top; it improves rotational inertia; it helps keep the center of gravity low and stable. PLA can be used, but PETG is recommended . PETG offers better impact resistance and toughness, which is useful for a spinning battle top that may take repeated hits during combat. PLA may work for testing or display prints, but PETG should provide better durability in actual battles. Recommended settings for the battle top: Material: PETG preferred , PLA possible Infill: 100% Perimeters/walls: at least 3 Layer height: standard quality settings should work, but finer layers may improve fit and balance Print orientation: follow the provided model orientation when possible Calibration: flow, pressure advance / linear advance, and dimensional accuracy should be checked before printing Launcher The launcher is less exposed to direct combat impacts than the top, but its internal moving parts are mechanically important and should be printed carefully. For the gears and internal moving parts , PETG is recommended because these parts need a good balance of strength, wear resistance, and slight flexibility. Recommended settings for gears and moving parts: Material: PETG Perimeters/walls: 3 Infill: 10% Good dimensional accuracy required Avoid over-extrusion, as it may cause friction or poor movement The outer shell of the launcher is less critical mechanically. PLA is acceptable for these parts, although PETG can still be used if extra toughness is desired. Recommended settings for the launcher shell: Material: PLA acceptable , PETG optional Perimeters/walls: 3 Infill: 10–15% Focus on clean assembly and proper alignment Ripcord The ripcord should preferably be printed in PETG . This part needs to bend slightly during use while remaining strong enough to transfer force to the launcher mechanism. PETG is a better choice than PLA here because it is less brittle and more tolerant of repeated flexing. Recommended settings for the ripcord: Material: PETG strongly recommended Perimeters/walls: 3 Infill: 10–20% Make sure the teeth are clean and dimensionally accurate Avoid stringing or blobs, as they may interfere with smooth launching 3. Assembly Battle Top insert the 3 pins in the matching holes into the cap of the spinner from the top side (top is cambered), and push all the way possible, the shape should match ; then assemble the blade under the cap ; top side of the blade (flat side) should meet the bottom side of the cap and holes should align ; continue by pushing the top side (flat side) of the core against the bottom of the blade with hole align ; in theory, the pins should click in place and grab the core firmely admire Launcher insert the hook into the handle from the bottom side of the handle ; the hole matches the shape of the top of the hook ; orient the small gear with cross hole on top align the hole in the bottom of the gear with the hook and slide the gear onto the hook as far you can ; then twist the hook inside the gear to realign the top ears with the other holes of the cross hole that is on the top of the gear and let the hook slide down in the gear. Now the hook should not fall back trought the handle. then insert the square section of the hook pin i n the hole on the top of the hook. it should enter entierly in the hook and the remaining holes of the cross hole of the gear. Now put the big gear, large base in the bottom, in the handle and the matching pin ; close the handle by putting the cover (snow man shaped) on the top while matching holes and pins you're done, congratulation ! Please use photos provided as exemples and contact me for help. 4. Operation hold the launcher in your left hand with the snow man on top insert the ripcord in the handle all the way from the right side hook the top of the pins of the spinner on the hooks of the launcher pull the ripcord to launch enjoy 5. Finals Thoughts Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend Open Sauce 2026 in person, so I will not be able to bring S.U.B. to the battle arena myself. If anyone attending the event is willing to print it, launch it, and put it to the test against the other creations, I would be absolutely thrilled to see how it performs in real combat conditions. S.U.B. was designed to be a chunky, overbuilt, slightly ridiculous little physics experiment, and I would love for it to get its chance in the arena. Please remix it to your liking, there is still some work to do to improve it but i'm runing out of time on this project right now. Thank you @Prusa3D for this opportunity to learn new things and improve my skills while competing to win a great prize.
