Beskrivelse
Let me tell you a story about Odysseus. A story of a king who sailed away from home, of monsters and gods, of storms and strange lands, of friends he lost and trials he could never escape. A story of a man who wanted only one thing: to return home. THE BEGINNING The war of Troy was over. Odysseus and his men set sail, believing that the journey back to Ithaca would be short. They were wrong. The sea carried them far from home, into a world where every island hid a new danger. And so began the long journey of Odysseus. THE CYCLOPS On the way home they came to an unknown island and entered a dark cave, searching for food. They soon discovered that the cave belonged to Polyphemus, a gigantic Cyclops. The giant trapped them inside and began devouring the men one by one. Odysseus knew that strength alone could never defeat such a creature. So he chose cunning. He gave the Cyclops wine and told him that his name was Nobody. When Polyphemus fell asleep, Odysseus and his men drove a sharpened stake into his single eye. Blinded and enraged, the giant called for help. But when the other Cyclopes asked who was attacking him, Polyphemus could only cry: “Nobody!” Odysseus and his remaining men escaped beneath the bellies of the Cyclops' sheep. But as they sailed away, Odysseus could not resist revealing his true name. Polyphemus then called upon his father, Poseidon, to punish him. And from that moment on, the sea itself became Odysseus' enemy. THE LAISTRYGONIANS Odysseus sailed onward. They reached the land of the Laestrygonians, a race of enormous and savage people. Their ships entered a narrow harbor, surrounded by towering cliffs. It was a trap. The giants appeared above them and began hurling enormous stones down upon the ships. The sea filled with wreckage. Ship after ship was destroyed. Men were crushed beneath the falling rocks or swept into the water. Odysseus managed to escape with a single ship. His fleet was gone. His men were gone. And the long journey home became lonelier than ever.
