I recently saw the brilliant HelixCore – Press-to-Spin Squishy Ball and wondered if the mechanism could be refined into a one-handed fidget spinner… Finally after many iterations this is my final product! What makes it different? Unlike a traditional fidget spinner, this design can be operated entirely with one hand. Pressing the button compresses the spring and drives a spiraled rod that powers the spinner with help from a ratchet, allowing you to repeatedly press and release it to keep the spinner moving. The mechanism was designed to minimize the number of components while still providing a satisfying mechanical feel. Print settings The model is designed to be printed without supports, however supports under the black accents on the spinner are recommended for multi-color. I recommend PLA with a 0.2 mm layer height for most parts however if you want to use PETG or a 0.1mm layer height for the top ratchet, that would improve durability, however I have used both and noticed no difference. Hardware The mechanism requires just one spring. 25mm height, 5mm diameter and a compressed size of 10mm (15mm of compression). No bearings, lubricant or additional hardware are required. You can either buy the spring from Makerworld or get a suitable one from a sacrificial clicky ballpoint pen. Assembly Assembly is relatively simple, as shown in the render below. Just ensure the snap-fit joint bumps line up with their corresponding holes before pressing the parts together.
