Envy is an insidious worm that can gnaw at even the holiest of men. And Theofaustus had never been a perfect man. He had spent his entire life serving in the Papal Guard, just as his father, his grandfather, and every one of his ancestors had done before him, all the way back to his great-great-grandfather. Yet he had always done so as an inadequate shadow of their heroic legacy. He had never been respected. He had no wealth, no rank, no prestige, none of what he believed should have been his by inheritance and bloodline. As he fought and bled across muddy battlefields for a fat, wealthy Holy Father, his envy slowly led him to treason. The spies of the Lords of Avarice were always on the lookout for valuable assets, and he was willing to change sides for the right price, that is, a high one. After all, he could grant them access to the Sacred Crypt, where the Papal Guard's mechanized armor was kept, as well as its arsenals, ammunition depots, and holy relics. Hell should make him a Prince, a general, a key figure. He carefully planned his defection, but Ambition and Avarice are sisters to Pride, and in the end he made the mistake of underestimating the vigilance of the Inquisition. Betrayed by his own mistakes, he was forced to flee for his life, taking only what he wore: his armor, his weapons, and as many relics as he could steal. But he was still valuable. Hell would have no choice but to grant him a position worthy of respect. Once again, he had underestimated the cruelty of the Lords of Avarice, who laughed at his demands. "Wealth? You may keep whatever you can steal." "Honor? No. Not that. We do not reward traitors. Having your life spared is reward enough." Now Theofaustus survives in the trenches, hating his comrades, hated by them in return, and hated even more by his enemies. Every day is a battle.
