Beskrivelse
Turn a small display into its own little world. This faceted rock shelf brings a piece of floating landscape to your wall. Its flat top provides a simple stage for a favourite model, while the irregular cliffs taper beneath it and conceal the mounting hardware. Originally designed to display a castle, it also makes a home for miniatures, figurines, a tiny diorama, a treasured keepsake, or a lightweight plant in a small pot. Matte dark grey gives it a natural stone appearance. Choose another colour to make it part of a fantasy landscape—or a bold feature in its own right. There are three sizes. The full-size shelf prints in two pieces, with a joint that follows the existing facet edges to make the seam less noticeable. Four hexagonal snap pins align and connect the halves. The two smaller shelves each print as a single piece and use their own compact, concealed wall bracket. Choose your size Dimensions are width × depth × height, in millimetres. Version Assembled size Rock pieces Intended bed size Large 360 × 180 × 138 2 Each half fits 220 × 220 mm, subject to brim and printer exclusions Small 170 × 85 × 65.2 1 180 × 180 mm or larger Medium 210 × 105 × 80.5 1 220 × 220 mm or larger The small and medium versions leave 5 mm per side along their width on the listed beds. Keep any brim narrow and check your slicer's actual build-area limits. A bed with a longer rectangular axis can also work when the part is oriented appropriately. The top outline is irregular: these dimensions describe the overall envelope, not a guaranteed rectangular usable area. Check the footprint of the object you want to display. Display objects are not included. Parts to print Large — 360 mm - rock_360mm_part_A_small_rev010.stl — print 1 . - rock_360mm_part_B_large_rev010.stl — print 1 . - connector_5B_M01.stl — print 4 . Each carries a large B marking. - wall_bracket_rev010.stl — print 2 . Small — 170 mm - rock_170mm_one_piece_S001.stl — print 1 . - wall_bracket_small_S001.stl — print 1 . Medium — 210 mm - rock_210mm_one_piece_S001.stl — print 1 . - wall_bracket_small_S001.stl — print 1 . The two smaller shelves share the same compact bracket file. It is different from the large shelf's bracket. Print settings The original project used a Prusa CORE One L with a 0.4 mm high-flow nozzle and eSUN Matte Dark Grey PLA . Part Layer height Walls Top / bottom layers Infill Brim Rock 0.20 mm 4 5 / 5 15% gyroid 5 mm on large halves Wall bracket 0.20 mm 5 5 / 5 40% gyroid None Snap pins 0.20 mm 3 4 / 4 15% gyroid None The rock settings were used for the full-size prints. The bracket settings were prepared and checked in the slicer. These settings are starting points for the new small and medium versions , which have not yet been physically printed. For small and medium rocks, a narrow brim of about 3 mm is an option if adhesion needs help; check that it fits your bed. Brim is deliberately disabled on the snap pins to keep their edges clean. The pins have printed successfully without it on the original printer. Temperature: the original profile used 230°C for the first layer, 225°C afterwards, and a 60°C bed . These are values used with that particular PLA and high-flow setup, not universal settings. Start with your filament manufacturer's guidance and an established profile for your machine. Retain normal PLA cooling, including cooling for bridges. Gyroid is the documented baseline, not a requirement of the design. If you use another infill pattern, inspect the internal closures in the new slice; estimates and local toolpaths can change. Keep the wall counts, especially around mounting features. Orientation and supports - Rock: print upside down, with the flat display surface on the bed. Do not stand it on its pointed underside or turn it onto its wall-facing side. - Large rock halves: rotate each supplied STL 90° around the vertical Z axis to match the bed orientation used for the tested full-size prints. Keep the flat display surface on the bed. - Wall brackets: print with the broad, flat wall-contact face on the bed, as supplied. - Snap pins: print flat in the supplied orientation, with the B marking facing up. Do not print them standing on end. The full-size rock halves and original brackets were sliced without supports . The small and medium versions are intended for the same support-free approach, but inspect their layer previews before printing: their revised mounting geometry has only been checked in CAD so far. Avoid automatically filling the sliding mount or snap sockets with supports. Print all files at 100% scale . The small versions have purpose-built mounting features with normal hardware sizes; simply scaling another version also scales its holes and clearances. Assembly and wall mounting For the large shelf, test the four B pins in the sockets before assembling all of them at once. Align the halves and press them together along the pin axes. All four axes are parallel, even where the surrounding joint faces are angled. Avoid twisting the halves while inserting them. Glue is optional for a permanent joint; dry-fit first and keep adhesive out of the spring slots. You will need wall screws and anchors suitable for your wall. The M4 locking screws and matching nuts are optional. I use my full-size shelf without them: the sliding bracket mount already holds it securely in my installation. The optional screws provide extra retention against lifting the shelf off its brackets. Version Printed brackets Wall screws Optional M4 nuts and locking screws Large 2 2 total 2 of each, if used Small / Medium 1 2 total 1 of each, if used The wall-screw clearance holes are 5.5 mm , with countersinks up to 11 mm diameter. Choose wall screw lengths and anchors for your actual wall construction. If using the optional locking screws, choose lengths that engage the M4 nuts fully without bottoming out. - Test-fit the brackets. If using the optional locking screws, insert the M4 nuts into their side-accessible pockets before hanging the shelf. - Mark the wall using the actual brackets and check the marks with a level. The large bracket centres are 130 mm apart . The compact bracket's two wall-screw centres are 36 mm apart . - Fasten the brackets securely. Position them so the locking holes face upwards. - Hold the shelf slightly above its final position and lower it onto the brackets. - Optional: insert the M4 locking screws through the top of the shelf and tighten gently for extra retention against lifting. Skip this step if you are not using locking screws; avoid overtightening into printed plastic. Use and testing status The full-size rock halves have been physically printed, and the ordinary 5B snap-pin design was selected after several printed fit tests. The new 170 mm and 210 mm versions have valid, closed meshes and CAD-checked bracket fit and insertion clearance, but have not yet been physically printed, fitted, or load-tested . This is a decorative display shelf with no established load rating . Its usable load depends on the printed parts, material, wall construction and fixings. Keep displays lightweight and test the installation before adding valued objects. For a plant, use a waterproof outer pot and remove it for watering. Keep PLA away from heat sources and strong direct sunlight. Licence and remixes Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). You may share, modify and use the design commercially with attribution to renehagen . Link to this original model and the licence, and indicate changes. The ZIP archive under Other Files includes native CAD geometry and the editable generator for the smaller variants, for anyone who would like to adapt the design. If you print one, share a make—I'd love to see what lives on your floating rock.
