Individually-addressable RGB LED shoulder patches, built around David Shorey's ( ShoreyDesigns ) Dragon Scales print-on-fabric technique. Each patch is a sheet of scales printed directly onto mesh, shingled over a printed tray that holds a chain of WS2812B-style ("NeoPixel") LEDs, so every scale (or column of scales) can be lit its own color. The base tray (Dragon_Scales_Patch-Base.stl) is printed in black TPU to house two WS2812B LED matrix boards, which are wired in series (DO/GND/+5V from board 1 to DI/GND/+5V on board 2), reinforced with copper tape, and fitted with 3-pin JST pigtails for daisy-chaining. The scale sheet (Dragon_Scales_Patch-Scales.stl) is printed separately in PETG with a pause at layer 2, at which point mesh/tulle fabric is laid over the printed first layers and pinned flat with magnets so the remaining layers fuse the scales directly onto the fabric as one flexible piece — finished with a light coat of silver metallic spray paint so light "side-fires" off the scales rather than just diffusing flatly. Final assembly seats the wired LED pair into the base tray's recess, glues the mesh-backed scale sheet over the top with B-6000 adhesive (hiding the electronics and mesh edges), and adds a strip of Velcro to the back for mounting to a garment. Multiple patches can be daisy-chained via their JST connectors and driven off a single WS2812-compatible controller (Arduino/ESP32) and 5V supply — the README shows the result worn on the shoulders of a denim vest, with photos documenting each wiring and assembly step.
